Medical Insurance for International Student in Canada

Comprehensive Coverage for Your Child
Provided by Vancouver-based Insurance Agency

Did you know students can face an insurance “coverage gap” — periods with no medical coverage at all? This can happen during the MSP waiting period and between school health plan effective dates. A single emergency room visit can cost tens of thousands of dollars — making this one of the biggest overlooked risks for students new to Canada.

Wise Planning helps students and their families secure comprehensive medical coverage during this critical transition period — providing students peace of mind from day one in Canada, and reassurance for parents back home.

Who Needs International Student Medical Insurance in Canada?

Anyone visiting Canada on a short-term basis without provincial health insurance coverage is a strong candidate for this plan — especially the following groups, who often fall into a "system blind spot" or face heightened medical risk.

Covers the MSP Waiting Period

Newly Arrived International Students

Provincial health insurance isn't yet active upon arrival in Canada. This plan isn't about "whether you'll need it" — it's about "whether you can financially handle it if something happens", giving parents back home genuine peace of mind.

High Dependency, High Risk

Accompanying Parents

Most accompanying parents are over 45, lack provincial coverage, and face language barriers. Medical emergencies become extremely costly to manage. A plan with "Chinese-language support" is the essential baseline for navigating life abroad.

Overlooked by the System

Short-Term Program Students

Short-term students typically don't qualify for MSP, and schools may not offer long-term coverage. Falling into this "system blind spot" requires private international student insurance to effectively fill this high-risk medical gap.

3–6 Month Coverage Gap

Post-Graduation Work Permit Wait

School insurance ends on graduation day, but work permits and provincial coverage often take time to process. During this transition between approval and job search, medical risk must never be left "without a safety net".

After Landing Waiting Period

Children of New Immigrants

School-age children in newly immigrated families typically face a 3-month provincial health insurance waiting period after landing. International student insurance bridges this "high-risk coverage gap" perfectly during this critical window.

Insufficient Coverage

Private School Students

Some private schools offer in-house insurance with low coverage limits or significant restrictions. If parents are concerned about coverage gaps, supplementing with a higher-limit private international student policy provides robust additional protection.

Eligibility Overview

International Students & Accompanying Parents in Canada

Below are the common basic eligibility requirements for international students and accompanying parents / family members when purchasing medical insurance. This helps you quickly assess whether you generally qualify, so you can avoid invalid applications.

International Students (Student Applicants)

Since most international students already have basic medical insurance arranged by their school, this policy is specifically designed for students still in the provincial health coverage waiting period — bridging that protection gap.

  • Full-time students enrolled at a recognized Canadian educational institution (including language schools, foundation programs, and Pathway programs)
  • Age meets the insurer's requirements (most plans require under age 60)
  • In good health, with no major pre-existing conditions, and completion of a health questionnaire
  • Valid student visa or related enrollment documentation

Accompanying Parents / Family Members

Accompanying parents typically hold visitor visas and are not immediately eligible for local public healthcare benefits. This insurance is specifically designed for accompanying families, covering unexpected medical risks from entry through their stay and helping avoid major out-of-pocket expenses.

  • Available for the student's parents, spouse, children, or legal guardians
  • Typically ages 59–64 or under (subject to specific insurer requirements)
  • Currently in Canada as an accompanying family member, without provincial healthcare coverage
  • No recent major hospitalization or major treatment history, with stable overall health

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does buying insurance guarantee visa approval?

The visa decision is made by IRCC. Compliant insurance is one of the required conditions for approval. What we can ensure is that your insurance plan fully meets official requirements, leaving the visa officer no grounds for refusal on this basis.

Does Super Visa insurance have to cover a full year?

Yes. Per official policy, Super Visa insurance must cover a minimum of 1 year. If the actual stay is shorter and no claims have been filed, you can apply for a prorated refund on the unused days after returning home.

Can I still purchase or renew coverage while in Canada?

Some insurers allow in-country applications, but typically with a waiting period. The safest approach is to arrange coverage before your parents arrive in Canada. For renewals, we recommend contacting us at least 7 days before the current policy expires.

Do I need a printed copy of the policy at entry?

We recommend bringing a printed copy for quick presentation to border officers. Also save a PDF version on your phone and forward it to traveling companions or family as backup, in case poor network connection prevents on-the-spot downloading at entry.

Are claims direct-billed or reimbursed?

Major hospitalizations and emergencies are usually settled through direct billing between the insurer and the hospital. For smaller outpatient costs, you typically pay upfront and submit receipts for reimbursement. Always keep all original receipts.

Can parents with hypertension or diabetes still get coverage?

Yes. As long as the pre-existing condition stability period requirements are met (no medication changes, no hospitalizations, no new symptoms), coverage is available. We'll help you clearly define this, ensuring there are no information-reporting disputes at the time of claim.

If I already have school insurance, do I need additional coverage?

Confirm the school plan's coverage amount and effective dates. If the official plan has a "coverage gap" (such as before classes start or after graduation) or insufficient limits, supplemental coverage is recommended.

Can I get a refund if I return home early or transfer schools?

As long as no claims have been filed under the policy, most insurers support prorated refunds for the remaining days. We'll help guide you through the cancellation process to minimize financial loss from an early-ended trip.

After Super Visa approval, do I still need insurance for future entries?

Throughout the Super Visa's validity period, every entry requires a qualifying 1-year insurance policy. Border officers have the right to verify the policy upon re-entry, so we recommend either purchasing fresh coverage before each entry or ensuring continuous active coverage.
